The Feeling of Jazz ( Indie )
*** 1/2 ( out of 4 )
Trombonist Brown, a New York-based Jazzer from Toronto who was heard frequently around here in the 1990s with the likes of trumpeter Jake Wilkinson and pianist Mark Eisenman, plays strikingly well on this disc, nine tunes on which his unusual front line with guitarist Randy Napoleon thrives. The Brown tones can be suavely soft on classic ballads like "you Don't Know What Love Is" and Strayhorn's "Day Dream," he can swing comfortably at medium tempo (Ellington's title track ) and be both fleet and fluent on zippy standards like the Hart-Rodgers classic "Blue Room" and the jazz anthem "Nica's Tempo." The solid rhythmic buzz comes from bass Clovis Nicolas and drummer Phil Stewart. The Napoleon cut "Street Steam" lets Brown cruise elegantly through the melody and its variations while smartly supporting guitar, while on his sole composing contribution, "The Lake Louise Waltz (At X-Mas )," the leader shows off his rhapsodic side as well as a great sense of time and controlled dynamics.
